Today’s Neighborhood Event

In our general neighborhood there are a lot of gringos and it seems that things are very social.  Just down the road is a Bed & Breakfast and it appears several couples live there for weeks or months.  The owners are from Seattle, who I hope to meet soon.  They also do rescue dog work, so you better like dogs as many are around.

At the end of our turnaround in the compound, there is a lady named Adele, from Oregon, who is in the fashion business. She also rents her home and casita on VRBO and the name of the property is El Barco. She gets ideas from the native weavers, and also assists these cute little Zapotec women in selling their textiles and clothing on the internet.  Today we were invited to a fashion show at her casa to view the clothing from the ladies.  They come into Oaxaca a couple of times a year on the bus from their village, after a 24 hour trip.  The two ladies stayed last night with Adelle.

At the show, there were 10 or 12 couples all with shopping opportunities, without going to town.  All the guys stood around and talked and drank Mexican Mimosa’s.  That is a mimosa with tequila and lime instead of rum!  It was fun to meet all these neighbors, all similar in age to Mary Ann and me.  You could tell as all the male names were Tom (3), David, John, Bill, etc.  Needless to say, in our family, at least Amanda and Mary Ann made purchases.  I enjoyed the event, meeting people, and seeing the casa.  The casas are all so different and unusual.

Tomorrow, the family thundering herd heads back to Seattle, much to our distress.  We all had a wonderful time as you can see from the posts the last few days.  To finish the week, we all went downtown for final shopping for the wonderful Oaxacan handicrafts and lunch of Oaxacan specialties.  A terrific week, and off to the airport bright and early tomorrow morning.

The Vultures – We can see a cell phone tower from our patio-deck, and each morning on top of it  are a whole group of very large vultures.  In our casa we have a telescope so we can very clearly see them hanging out, presumably waiting for breakfast.  It is very dry here in Oaxaca this time of year, but vultures?   Several people from our compound participate in bird watching, but I presume they are looking for all those cute U.S. birds now wintering here.
